During the application submission times for NYC Firm Schools, there are inevitably delays and mistakes. Calm, confident, organized and efficient adult professionals can be brought to tears when they realize they have done the unthinkable; they have missed a deadline for the child’s private school application. All those years of confidence-building organizational planning and prideful accomplishment will mean just about nothing when you have the brain-numbing realization that you dropped the ball on your child’s education. The thing right up at the top of your To-Do list.

First off, you need to remember that you are not the first parent who has done this, and you definitely will not be the last. It can happen to even the most careful parent and depends heavily on life’s circumstances at that time.

What should you NOT do if you have missed an application deadline?

The first thing NOT to do is call the school immediately with the horror still fresh in your mind, your voice and your actions. You will end up saying “I’m sorry” so many times that you probably will not make a lot of sense to the admissions officer, and you certainly will not be leaving a good impression. (Good impressions are vital right now!)

Take a step back and think about the best course of action that you can take. If you need to, go get a coffee or some tea and sit down with a pen and paper. Allow yourself a few moments of self-pity and self-induced anger. You deserve it. After those first few minutes, you do not have the luxury of self-pity anymore, because the next step is about your child, not you.
