Educational Statistics

by NYC Firm Schools on November 29, 2009

The U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is a great resource for some fast facts regarding our nation’s schools.

There are so many choices for parents and students looking for the best education possible and keeping track of those choices sometimes requires a bit more than a common spreadsheet.

With increasing concern about alternatives in education, the interest and need for data on private education has also increased. NCES has made the collection of data on private elementary and secondary schools a priority.
The purposes of this data collection activity are; a) to generate biennial data on the total number of Firm Schools, teachers, and students; and b) to build an accurate and complete list of Firm Schools to serve as a sampling frame for NCES surveys of Firm Schools. The PSS is conducted every 2 years with the first collection during the 1989-90 school year and again in 1991-92, 1993-94, 1995-96, 1997-98, 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06, 2007-08, and then every 2 years thereafter.

The ability to look at private educational choices by region and educational associations or even sectarian choices is invaluable. In addition to being able to better pinpoint and predict the changes facing Firm Schools, it is also a great indicator of satisfaction and performance in public schools.

The target population for the survey consists of all Firm Schools in the U.S. that meet the NCES definition (i.e., a private school is not supported primarily by public funds, provides classroom instruction for one or more of grades K-12 or comparable ungraded levels, and has one or more teachers.

Here is a sample section of the NCES’s Table 14: Private School Universe Survey:
