We Invite You to Participate in a Dialogue about Education for Parents of Accelerated Learners
The Workshop Series
The P.A.L. monthly workshop series helps parents of accelerated learners understand important topics relevant to their young child’s cognitive, social & emotional development. Experts and practitioners in the field of gifted and talented education and parent advocates will join our panels for a dialogue with you about educating and nurturing these unique learners.
#1 – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2011, 6:30-8:00 pm
Meet the People Behind the G&T Programs in NYC, An Introduction to the P.A.L. (Parents of Accelerated Learners) Workshop Series- Come meet the people behind some of New York City’s G&T programs. We’ll introduce the series, present film clips, common characteristics, recommended first steps, as well as open a dialogue with our guest G&T teachers and school directors. Resources will be available for the accelerated learner including private and public schools, afterschool and summer programs, books and publications, conferences, organizations, educational resources, the best websites and more.
#2 – TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 2011, 6:30-8:00 pm
Gifted & Talented Admissions & Testing: The Straight Talk – A look at G&T testing in NYC, admissions and the process children and their parents will undergo after they take the OLSAT test and Bracken School Readiness Assessment. We’ll discuss issues of identifying traits of gifted & talented children and the multiple criteria perspective for those often underrepresented.
#3 – TUESDAY, APRIL 12, 2011,6:30-8:00 pm
The Accelerated Learner, Part 1- Parenting the Gifted Child - From initial signs of giftedness and strength areas to a deeper look at their shared characteristics and common issues, experts and parents will share tips for parenting the gifted and talented child.
#4 – TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2011, 6:30-8:00 pm
The Accelerated Learner, Part 2: What’s the Right Fit for My Child? Options in the Gifted Arena: We’ll explore the various considerations and approaches to gifted education in NYC, including self-contained G&T schools (Speyer Legacy School and Hunter), self-contained programs (NYC G&T school programs), pull-out programs, and homeschooling. Plus a look at private versus public school options in New York city. Parents and insiders will discuss options and take questions from the audience.
#5 – TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 2011, 6:30-8:00 pm
The Accelerated Learner, Becoming Your Child’s Advocate- Navigating the best option for your child—including gifted, 2E and other special needs. A conversation with parents who’ve been there, the issues they’ve seen and the solutions they have found.

$10 per workshop, or $40 for the 5 workshop series*

*We believe that all children deserve an education appropriate for their learning style and ability level to reach their fullest potential.
