There are a host of reasons that result in applications sent into NYC Firm Schools in the springtime for fall admission. Yes, it is true that schools have already received applications and rejected, waitlisted or accepted the students that will attend in the fall. This does not, however, mean that no child is ever accepted “off season.”

Many families relocate to and from the city in the mid-year and find themselves in need of a Private School for their children. Extenuating family circumstances such as illness or divorce can also lead to a change in educational venues and needs for students.

What do you do when your child needs to apply to Private School in the Spring?

The first thing that you need to do is keep an open mind and an open phone line. You are probably going to be making a lot of calls. After doing your initial (and fast!) research into which schools will be a good match for your family, you then have to start calling them.

  • Explain the circumstances that have led you to apply at this time
  • Have test scores, applications and reference letters ready

The most selective and competitive schools probably already have a wait list that they will go to for filling slots, but you will most likely find a receptive ear at some of the not-so-well known, but excellent institutions.

In regards to Financial Aid assistance, the circumstances aren’t favorable. FA is usually divvied out on a first-come first-serve basis and most, if not all, available funds for the upcoming school year are already ear-marked for students already accepted.
