All Girls NYC Private School Focus on the Brearley School

Self confidence and competence describe the girls at the Brearley School, located in the Gracie Point neighborhood nearby Carl Shurz Park on New York’s east side. Brearley girls solve problems by evaluating what they hear and read and see, developing the foundation of their learning.

Head of the school, Stephanie J. Hull, Ph.D. states

“Balancing their unparalleled academic education with travel study, community service, a wide range of opportunities in the visual and performing arts, an extensive athletics program and an ever-expanding selection of student-run clubs and committees, our students also develop a strong sense of personal integrity; they take seriously their responsibility to engage with the world in productive and principled ways.”

The school was founded in 1884 by Samuel A. Brearley Jr. when he decided to open a school that would provide girls with a comparable education to their brothers. When Mr. Brearley  passed on in 1886, the school was taken over by James G. Croswell, a Greek Professor from Harvard.

How to Help

By offering its students a firm grounding in the finest liberal arts tradition, complemented by education in the arts and athletics and enhanced by opportunities to engage with other cultures and perspectives, the Brearley School continues to uphold the original mission of its founder, preparing girls exceptionally well for active and responsible citizenship in an increasingly borderless world. Gifts to Brearley support this important work, so that each donor’s gift in effect becomes a vehicle for changing and improving the world through the life’s contributions of the talented young women educated at the School.

From 2005 through 2009, Brearley girls have gone off to many wonderful colleges, including but not limited to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, New York University, and many others.
