All Souls School

by NYC Firm Schools on May 3, 2010

All Souls School is an early childhood school that educates children from two-and-a-half years old through five in a diverse environment that includes families of different racial, religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.

A faculty made up of teachers with strong credentials develop programs that utilize a variety of learning modalities to engage children’s imaginations, to help them incorporate new information and to find joy in learning new skills.

Parent Participation

The participation of the parents is encouraged at All Souls School in the hopes that there will be good continuity between a child’s home and school life. This approach can help cut back on confusion and allows a deeper and better understanding directive toward learning, growing and understanding. The Director also provides guidance and participates in the ongoing school application process.

Applications for admissions are distributed through a lottery process. All Souls remains one of the NYC Firm Schools that only takes requests for applications by phone, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on the Tuesday through Thursday after Labor Day and from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday of the same week. They do not accept requests for applications by fax, letters, e-mail or walk-in, nor do they use any on-line systems.

“During the following week, all the requests are divided according to the ages and gender of the children. Then names are randomly pulled from each age/gender group. These families will receive applications. The number of applications sent out depends upon the specific number of openings that we anticipate for the coming year. In general, we maintain a ratio of three applications for every space.”

To be eligible for enrollment in the upcoming school year, children must be 2 years 6 months old by September of the following year. The school has established a “cut-off” birth date of March 1st.

Children who will be older than 3 years 10 months old in September of the upcoming year are not included in the “lottery.” Families with children older than 3 years 10 months old who are interested in enrolling should call the school before January to request an application. Applications for four-year-old groups will be distributed when the enrollment board has determined the number of four-year-old spaces that will be available.

A generous scholarship program allows All Souls School to provide financial aid to many of its families. The school’s aim is to enroll students who reflect the socio-economic diversity of New York City. This policy makes for a stronger school and benefits everyone. Eligibility for a scholarship grant and the amount awarded is based on a family’s need.
