Focus on Aquinas High School

by NYC Firm Schools on August 3, 2010

Aquinas High School is located at 685 182nd Street in Bronx, NYC. AHS is an all-girls Catholic High School founded in 1923 by the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill.

Aquinas has welcomed each new wave of New York City’s population, finding the face of God in each new set of features and forming a body of Aquinas women with a heart for the whole human family.  Through a challenging curriculum with a broad spectrum of co-curricular activities and community service, Aquinas calls forth women who are confident, knowledgeable and committed to building a better world.

The school holds true to the beliefs that each student is created as a unique individual under God and deserves to be respected and reverenced. Students are given the opportunity to develop their own talents and gifts, and parents are highly encouraged to be a participant in their daughters’ education. The school believes that the diversity of its school community enhances the opportunity for each person to value the uniqueness of her own culture and to appreciate the culture of others – a vital need today, both locally and globally.

The school’s belief system extends also to the following:

  • That each person is called to lifelong learning, spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically and to the responsible exercise of citizenship.
  • That each person of faith is called to foster the community of faith in its message, worship, and service of humanity.
  • That women’s strengths and women’s voices have a vital role in today’s complex and changing world.
  • That seeking justice, peace and the integrity of creation is integral to living the Gospel.
  • That excellence requires continuous institutional improvement.
  • That truth, Aquinas’ motto Veritas, is the basis of right relationship centered in the love and mercy of God.
