Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor got her start in life in The Bronx. Her grade school while growing up in this NYC borough was Blessed Sacrament School.
The school is not to be confused with the School of the Blessed Sacrament, which is located in Manhattan. The Bronx Catholic school is located at 1160 Beach Avenue.
Blessed Sacrament serves students PreK through 8th grade and has an enrollment of over 500 students. There is a high teacher-student ratio, but remember what we said about those ratios. They’re not the sole indicator of educational quality.
The school does have a Facebook page, indicating that it isn’t stuck in the forgotten past.
The school, along with the church, was founded in 1929. There is a playground and a ballfield connected, showing that athletics is taken just as seriously as academics. There is a coziness to the campus, an old gothic revival building made of stone. The student body is 73% Hispanic and offers a strong Catholic foundation.
