Focus On Buckle My Shoe

by NYC Firm Schools on March 17, 2012

Buckle My Shoe is a two-campus early childhood education center located in the TriBeCa neighborhood of New York City. The school started in 1981 with seven two year olds and has grown to more than 200 students on both campuses.

The school incorporates the Reggio Emilia model of education, which is well known as a holistic educational model that develops the child’s cognitive, physical, social, and emotional skills through creative play. As a result, children have greater self-esteem and more confidence.

The campuses are located at 230 West 13th Street and 40 Worth Street.

Programs offered at Buckle My Shoe include:

  • Infant and Toddler Program
  • Pre-Kindergarten
  • Art
  • Special programs like Music, Yoga, Dance and Movement, and French
  • Block building

Parents are also encouraged to participate in the educational process at Buckle My Shoe.

The Infant and Toddler Program takes in children ages 3 months to 1 year. Every child has his or her own eating, sleeping, and playing schedule based on parent input. A caregiver assists each child with development of motor skills.

Pre-K starts at age 2 and goes through 5 1/2 years. Caregivers incorporate Reggio Emilia with the Bank Street philosophy and the philosophy of Jean Piaget.

The special programs offered at Buckle My Shoe are attended by infants and toddlers as well as pre-school children. Everyone has fun and learns at the same time. Other special activities are also offered for the children. These include cooking, woodworking, and special art projects.

Block building is a very important part of educational play at Buckle My Shoe. All participate and it helps develop motor skills, problem solving, math and logic skills, art skills, spatial reasoning, and cooperation.

Children learn to use their imaginations at Buckle My Shoe.
