Garden School, located in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, is an independent school with small classes and low tuition fees. Faculty at the school focus heavily on college counseling and less on bureaucratic frameworks that can tie teachers’ hands.
The school recognizes that children are individuals with unique learning styles and tries to adapt its curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
The Early Learning Center at Garden School is a child-centered nursery school, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten. It features a half-day and full-day program for two and three year olds, a full-day pre-K for three and four year olds, and a full-day kindergarten for five year olds. An after school program is open until 6 p.m.
The Lower Division is designed for children in grades 1 through 6. Students receive art and music twice a week and physical education at least three times a week. Mandarin Chinese is taught in grades 1-3 and French in grades 4-6.
The Upper Division consists of children in grades 7-12. Average class sizes are 15 students. In grades 7 and 8, students are prepared for entering high school. They receive a full array of extra-curricular activities and have a foreign language core requirement. Grades 9-12 have five required academic courses each year with an Advanced Placement program in place. Students have plenty of athletics programs, extra-curricular activities, and extensive electives available to them in grades 11 and 12.
Garden School teaches students a love for learning for learning’s sake and works on developing critical thinking skills.
