Focus on Open House

by NYC Firm Schools on July 22, 2012

Open House is a play-based nursery school in Brooklyn that accepts children ages 2 to 5. The school operates on a traditional school schedule and is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 until 3:00; Mid September to early June. Open House is a nut-free zone and no products containing nuts of any kind are allowed at the school. Early arrival and after care programs are available. The early arrival allows for children to arrive as early as 8am and the aftercare allows them to remain until 6pm. There is also a summer school program available.

Open House takes the approach that children learn best in an environment that is warm, relaxed and welcoming. To that end academics are not formally taught but are learned through hands on demonstrations, activities and play. Both indoor and outdoor play are available (weather permitting) and the staff allow many choice activities instead of always taking the lead.

While academics are not formally taught, emerging reading, writing, math and science are taught using games and through play. Music, art and dance is informal and art is primarily craft projects that encourage the child to be creative. Children are also allowed ample choice time where they get to choose their activities.

Snacks are provided by the school and children bring their lunches. Children will be encouraged to eat during lunch but not forced. Uneaten food, whenever possible, will be sent home so parents have a record of what their child is eating and what foods they prefer at school. No candy of any kind is permitted at school except for a few days after Halloween.
