Located on Tilden Avenue in Brooklyn is a preparatory school with early childhood and elementary school programs. The school is Phyl’s Academy Prep.
The school was founded in 1979 by a registered nurse. In 1988, Phyl’s Academy opened its first branch outside of New York in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Admission in the early childhood program at Phyl’s Academy Prep is based on space availability. The learning environment is nurturing and designed to provide preschool children room to grow and discover the world around them through storytelling, block and manipulative play, pre-reading, pre-math, artistic expression, and physical activity.
Kindergarten students are introduced to reading through “a curriculum based on discovery, observation, and phonetic instruction.” They also get a daily dose of physical activity, block play, and storytelling along with an introduction to computer literacy.
In elementary school, students learn through field trips and special programs. The academic curriculum consists of foreign language, computer literacy, language arts, reading comprehension, creative writing, oral presentation, mathematics, science, social studies, multi-cultural studies, physical education, and art.
Students through grade 5 can participate in extracurricular activities that include:
- African drumming
- Vocal instruction
- Private piano instruction
Phyl’s Academy Prep also offers an extended day program and homework assistance and tutoring is on the plate for the future.
The educational philosophy at Phyl’s Academy is based on growing each individual child according to his or her creativity, knowledge and character.
